NSS (NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME)
THE SCHEME IS NOT ONLY USEFUL BUT ALSO ESSENTIAL FOR THE FULL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PERSONALITY OF THE STUDENTS,PARTICULARLY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CAMPUS SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY WHERE BESIDES PURELY ACADEMIC WORK OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT ARE SCARCE EXPECT THE NCC AND SPORTS ETC.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE NSS AS ORIGINALLY ENVISAGED WAS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY WHILE UNDERGOING INSTRUCTION IN COLLEGES.IT WAS SOUGHT TO AWAKEN THE SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE STUDENTS AND PROVIDE THEM WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH PEOPLE AROUND THE CAMPUS CREATIVELY AND CONSTRUCTIVELY AND TO PUT THEIR EDUCATION TO CONCRETE SOCIAL USE.
THE MOTTO
THE MOTTO OF NSS IS “NOT ME BUT YOU”. THIS EXPRESSES THE ESSENCE OF DEMOCRATIC LIVING, UPHOLDS THE NEED FOR SELFLESS SERVICE AND APPRECIATION OF THE OTHER MAN’S POINT OF VIEW AND UNDERLINES THAT THE WELFARE OF THE INDIVIDUAL IS ULTIMATELY DEPENDENT ON THE WELFARE OF SOCIETY AS WHOLE. THEREFORE, IT SHOULD BE THE AIM OF THE NSS TO DEMONSTRATE THIS MOTTO IN ITS DAT TO DAY PROGRAMMES.
NSS SYMBOL
THE SYMBOL OF NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME, AS SHOWN ON THE COVER PAGE OF THIS MANUAL IS BASED ON THE “RATH” WHEEL OF THE KONARK SUN TEMPLE IN ORISSA. THESE GIANT WHEELS OF THE SUN TEMPLE PORTRAY THE CYCLE OF CREATION, PRESERVATION AND RELEASE AND SIGNIFY THE MOVEMENT OF LIFE ACROSS TIME AND SPACE. THE DESIGN OF THE SYMBOL A SIMPLIFIED FORM OF THE SUN CHARIOT WHEEL PRIMARILY DEPICTS MOVEMENT. THE WHEEL SIGNIFIES THE PROGRESSIVE CYCLE OF LIFE.IT STANDS FOR CONTINUITY AS WELL AS CHANGE AND IMPLIES THE CONTINUOUS STRIVING OF THE NSS FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION AND UPLIFT.
NSS DAY
THE NSS WAS FORMALLY LANCHED ON 24TH SEPTEMBER,1969, THE BIRTH CENTENARY YEAR OF THE FATHER OF THE NATION.THEREFORE,24 SEPTEMBER IS CELEBRATED EVERY YEAR AS NSS DAY WITH APPROPRIATE PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES.
